Girl Child Protection
Sundarban
Insufficient food, unbalanced nutrition, contamination... the most vulnerable victims are infants and children
The project
The Girl Child Protection project started 3 years ago and focuses on South 24 Parganas in the Sundarbans. Approximately 8,200,000 people reside here, with nearly 4,000,000 being women.
West Bengal is one of the most vulnerable regions in terms of girl trafficking. The total number of reported cases of human trafficking is estimated to be around 20% of India's total human trafficking cases. During the COVID-19 lockdown, this issue has clearly escalated.
To address this problem, SSDC established Village Level Child Protection Committees. These committees primarily focus on information and awareness-raising. They aim to prevent child labor, early school dropout, and human trafficking. The committees collaborate with the government.
Through this program, SSDC aims to create a safety net around vulnerable girls, with the VLCP Committees taking the lead. Fifteen child committees were established at the village level to reach the most vulnerable families.
PAZ wholeheartedly supports this project and provides an annual contribution of €15,000. This was made possible in 2019, 2020, and 2021 thanks to the contribution from "Hope for Girls" by Lieve Blancquaert. From 2022 onward, we have been seeking new sponsors.
For 2023, we have allocated a budget of €15,000.
