Clinic Boat
Sundarban
No longer taking the patient to the doctor but taking the doctor to the patient
The project
The population in the Sundarbans is scattered across 52 islands, with virtually no access to healthcare. People are forced to travel to distant hospitals, and connections to the mainland are sporadic, irregular, and expensive. All of this necessitates a different approach and creative entrepreneurship. The traditional path of the patient to the doctor is often impossible, which is why we chose the opposite: taking the doctor to the patient.
In 2011, we initiated the "clinic boat" project. We purchased a second-hand boat and converted it with the necessary facilities for transportation and outpatient consultations. The investment for the boat's purchase and modifications amounted to €65,000. On July 11, 2012, the clinic boat made its maiden trip. Today, the boat operates 6 out of 7 days. The operational costs amount to €300 per working day.
Until March 31, 2023, the financing was provided by the Hans Foundation from India. Now, we are seeking new sponsors!
